Your work as a Data Engineer will accelerate the energy transition in the Netherlands.
Alliander faces the major challenge of the energy transition and the implementation of the climate agreement. This requires significant investments in our energy grid. Thanks to smart technology, we are becoming increasingly adept at responding to changing supply and demand. We must find solutions that allow us to handle even greater volumes of work while continuing to guarantee the quality and safety of our grid.
As a Data Software Engineer in the Operations Decision Support (ODS) department, you’ll play a key and hands-on role in developing and implementing projects that contribute to Alliander’s strategic goals and improve planning.
Description of the Contractor's Compass Use Case
Uitvoerderskompas supports field supervisors’ planning by providing insight into workload, capacity, utilization, and future staffing needs. The solution helps planners and managers make informed decisions and increase the reliability of field supervisor planning.
In the coming period, the focus will be on further professionalizing the application. To this end, we are working to improve reliability, user-friendliness, data quality, manageability, and adoption within the organization. The goal is to bring Uitvoerderskompas to a level of maturity by the end of 2026 that will enable the solution to be sustainably managed and further developed throughout the supply chain.
The application integrates data from various sources and requires close collaboration with business stakeholders, planners, data specialists, and IT teams. The focus is on creating a stable, scalable, and future-proof product.
What you will do
Design, build, and maintain data pipelines, APIs, and backend services using Python and SQL.
Integrating data from multiple sources into a single, cohesive data model.
Setting up CI/CD, Docker, and AWS infrastructure for stable and automated deployments.
Collaborate with data scientists to bring algorithms and optimization solutions into production as part of an Agile/Scrum team
Provide advice on data modeling, performance, and technical architecture.
Finding the right balance between quality and a pragmatic approach to make rapid progress
What to Bring
At least 4 years of work experience as a data engineer or software engineer in complex, data-intensive environments.
Extensive experience in developing scalable and reliable software
Extensive experience with Python, SQL (PostgreSQL), AWS, Docker, Dagster/Airflow, Snowflake, data modeling, CI/CD, and DevOps
Experience designing and implementing applications that integrate data sources.
Familiarity with operational processes, capacity planning, and resource management.
Strong communication skills and experience in gathering requirements and guiding stakeholders toward widely accepted technical solutions.
Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams.
Pros:
Knowledge of Dagster, Snowflake, Kafka, AWS, Docker, optimization algorithms, statistical methods, or machine learning.
Knowledge of the energy market and/or infrastructure projects.
What this role is not
This position is not a BI role. You won’t be working on dashboards or reports, but rather on data products, pipelines, and software components that make our business processes smarter and more scalable.
What we’re currently working on:
Migrating existing workloads to Dagster.
Migrating integrations and connections to Autobahn.
Prepare and carry out the migration from Uitvoerderskompas to GVR&N.
Migrating applications to the PAX platform.
Implement solutions in accordance with Alliander's target architecture.
Set up and improve monitoring and alerting.
Further development of the ODS Engineer Hub.
Implement technical improvements resulting from the CISO's security and compliance requirements.
Making preliminary calculation data available via APIs and/or Kafka.
Improving access to plant drawings and documentation via SharePoint.
Setting up secure data exchange with external parties, for example, via Snowflake.
Design, build, and manage robust data pipelines, APIs, and backend services.
Collaborate with data scientists to deploy models and optimizations into production.
Actively contribute to technical decisions, architecture, and platform standards.
