The energy transition is impossible without you as a senior backend developer

As a senior backend developer on the Net Intelligence team, you’ll help make a difference by collaborating with users to develop innovative applications using smart meter data. We work with real-time data, and our backend technology stack includes Python, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, FastAPI, WebSockets, Redis, Kafka, and Kubernetes. Our applications run on AWS EKS and are deployed fully automatically using Argo CD GitOps workflows. Other infrastructure components are rolled out automatically via IaC using AWS CDK.

From applications with intuitive interfaces to dynamic map layers and real-time data visualizations: we continue to innovate and work with the latest technologies and standards. Join our team and help build great applications for Alliander colleagues in crisis management, grid operations, and field staff. Applications that really make an impact! You’ll help make the grid more innovative at Alliander. This is a 32–40-hour-per-week position.

The energy transition is impossible without you as a senior backend developer
The energy transition means we are increasingly facing disruptions in our low-voltage grid. By making better use of the capabilities of 3.5 million smart meters, our applications help us gain faster insight into disruptions, analyze them more effectively, and pinpoint their location. In the coming years, we aim to build a crisis management system to provide our users with greater insight and a clearer overview during major disruptions. We are a multidisciplinary team and have several highly experienced individuals who are eager to collaborate with you to contribute to solving these challenging issues.

We’re building the energy grid of the future for everyone, together with everyone. And as a senior backend developer, you’ll be part of this effort. In this role, you’ll be working on:

  • designing, developing, and managing robust backend solutions;

  • providing backend services for frontend components;

  • collaborating within our multidisciplinary Scrum team and, of course, with our user groups;

  • actively participate in code reviews and technical discussions;

  • ensure that the developed solutions are properly documented;

  • developing your own skills.

You're making things clearer at Alliander

Did you know that at Alliander, we develop and manage the energy grid for businesses and millions of people across the Netherlands? And with the current energy transition, that’s a lot of work. We do this with the help of a large team of professionals. Thanks to these talented individuals, we have every confidence in the Netherlands’ energy future. Together with you, we’re making that possible.

Coming up with smart solutions is only possible if you have enough energy. And the right work environment gives you that. As part of the team, you play a role in the entire development process. This ranges from brainstorming with users and the team, defining the technical solution, all the way to rolling out reviewed and tested code. We are a team that is physically present in the office two days a week (one day in Arnhem and one day in Amsterdam or Haarlem). Not because we have to, but because we enjoy seeing each other and our users. That makes it easier to brainstorm together. We’re proud of what we build and feel responsible as a team for our applications😊.

You'll be the perfect addition to our team

You draw on your own strengths and talents, and contribute through your inquisitive nature and sense of responsibility. We’d love to talk to you if you also bring the following:

  • At least 5 years of professional experience with Python, API frameworks, and extensive knowledge of SQL;

  • extensive experience with event-driven and asynchronous architecture;

  • experience in robustly setting up and managing an application;

  • knowledge of architecture, design, and strategies for working with real-time data;

  • ownership, responsibility, passion, curiosity, and proactivity;

  • your enthusiasm in working with the team to turn users’ pain points and wishes into concrete improvements.

During the interview, we’ll ask you to walk us through the design and code of a project you’re proud of.
