Role description and task arrangements

ArtEZ offers a comprehensive range of preparatory programs, an associate degree, and bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in visual arts, architecture, fashion, design, music, theater, creative writing, dance, and art education to more than 3,000 students in Arnhem, Enschede, and Zwolle.
ArtEZ is a specialized institution of higher education where lecturers and instructors bridge the gap between theory and practice. We collaborate with a wide range of partners both in the Netherlands and abroad, including other educational institutions, businesses, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.

For the Control and Advisory department, we are looking for a:

Business Controller (0.8–1 FTE)

You combine insight with direction
ArtEZ is constantly evolving: new degree programs, changing funding structures, external partnerships, and internal organizational development all require sound financial and business decisions. We are looking for a Business Controller who is comfortable with this dynamic environment and who, drawing on their big-picture perspective, experience, and sense of ownership, can contribute to our strategic direction and quality.

The Profile
The business controller we are looking for
  • Has at least 5 years of experience in a similar position;
  • has a critical, independent and overarching view and insight, thus contributing to the further development of ArtEZ;
  • Has core qualities of objectivity, analytical strength, thoroughness, stability and integrity;
  • has a broad perspective and can set priorities, even when interests and issues run parallel;
  • Has a "hands on" and flexible attitude;
  • is also consultative, directing and entrepreneurial towards core officers, heads and directors;
  • Is persistent in achieving results and holds parties accountable;
  • has a higher vocational education (HBO) or academic level of work and thinking in the field, with a solid background in business administration—e.g., a degree in Accountancy or Controlling;
  • has an affinity for education and is able to quickly grasp new concepts;
  • has an excellent understanding of political and administrative dynamics, organizational sensitivity, and policy and communication skills;
  • prefers to work in a small team;
  • is familiar with Excel,
  • visibly enjoys spending days in different locations and establishing connection.

Responsibilities
The primary focus is on ensuring the proper implementation and execution of the planning and control cycle. In addition, the role involves advising the units through “advice and action,” strengthening the control function, and providing recommendations on potential operational improvements and business cases.
The business controller provides effective tools for accounting for, monitoring, and adjusting policy. The business controller monitors implemented improvement actions and initiates new policies based in part on developments and trends, analysis of changes in laws and regulations, supervisory frameworks, and education funding.
