Job Description: Interim Director of Art & Design, Zwolle
ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design Zwolle

Scope: 0.6 FTE
Start date: as soon as possible, to be determined in consultation
Self-employed candidates are not eligible.

End of assignment: mid-July 2027, with a possible extension through December 2027

ArtEZ
ArtEZ University of the Arts is home to a diverse, international community of students, faculty, and researchers who find here the space for artistic, intellectual, and personal growth. Art unites us and inspires innovative ideas and alternative ways of thinking. Through inspiring arts education at the bachelor’s and master’s levels and leading-edge artistic research, ArtEZ creates a place where you can make a difference—in the arts and in society. ArtEZ has approximately 3,300 students and more than 1,000 staff members at its campuses in Arnhem, Enschede, and Zwolle.

The Vision and Mission
ArtEZ is at the heart of society. Its graduates contribute to the ongoing renewal of the arts and to the quality of society. ArtEZ’s educational program draws strength from its breadth across the disciplines of visual arts, design, architecture, music, dance, and theater. At ArtEZ, (aspiring) artists are given the space to make a meaningful impact: on individuals, groups, and organizations. ArtEZ shares responsibility for fostering an attractive and stimulating cultural climate and for supporting the cultural infrastructure in various communities—in the eastern Netherlands, nationwide, and internationally.

ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design Zwolle
ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design Zwolle teaches students to create work that establishes a connection between their own way of thinking and their personal experiences, the distinctiveness and history of their discipline, and the social context in which they practice their craft. Art & Design Zwolle trains students to become active and critical citizens with a mission. The academy offers programs in interior architecture, visual arts, design, and art education.

The assignment
Due to the departure of the current director, we are seeking an interim director on short notice who will assume overall responsibility for the academy. In addition to leading the experienced department heads—thereby ensuring the academy’s continuity and quality—and maintaining professional interactions with the student council, the other directors, and the ArtEZ Executive Board, there are four key tasks that require the director’s immediate attention:
  • further strengthening cooperation among the heads
  • the facilities for the various degree programs
  • the further development of the Education and Examination Regulations
  • positioning and representing the academy in the discussion regarding ArtEZ cluster formation within Art & Design

You will be a member of the ArtEZ-wide interim Art & Design management team and the Central Directors’ Consultative Committee, and you will report to the chair of the Executive Board.

Who are we looking for?
An experienced interim director who brings people together. Someone with natural authority who quickly gains trust, listens carefully, and communicates clearly, thereby instilling a sense of calm and confidence in a well-run academy that is constantly evolving.

We are looking for someone who meets the following requirements:

  • Extensive management experience. You have extensive, demonstrable experience as a director or manager with ultimate responsibility for personnel, finances, and operations. You have previously worked in an organization undergoing change, can quickly set priorities, and are not afraid to make decisions.
  • Strong communication skills. You are transparent, approachable, and easy to talk to; you explain decisions clearly and know how to convey even difficult messages with care. You speak and write Dutch and English fluently.
  • Connecting. You bring together students, faculty, department heads, the academic affairs office, and fellow academies, and build bridges between the academy, the cluster, the other directors, and the Board of Trustees. You work collaboratively as part of a shared leadership team.
  • Committed. You see the people behind the roles, are attuned to how change affects them, and give professionals trust and autonomy. You have experience promoting and ensuring social safety, inclusivity, and diversity.
  • Well-versed in higher education. You have inside knowledge of higher (arts) education. You understand how education, quality assurance, examinations, and student participation work. You have an affinity for visual arts and design; a network in the cultural and creative sectors is a plus.
