Role description and task arrangements

ArtEZ offers a comprehensive range of preparatory programs, an associate degree, and bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in visual arts, architecture, fashion, design, music, theater, creative writing, dance, and art education to more than 3,000 students in Arnhem, Enschede, and Zwolle.
ArtEZ is a specialized institution of higher education where lecturers and instructors bridge theory and practice. We collaborate with a large number of partners both in the Netherlands and abroad, including fellow educational institutions, companies, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.

For the Control and Advisory department, we are seeking a:

Mid-Level Business Controller (0.8 FTE)

You connect insight with direction
ArtEZ is constantly evolving: new degree programs, changing funding structures, external collaborations, and internal organizational development all require sound financial and business decisions. We are looking for a Business Controller who feels comfortable in this dynamic environment and who, drawing on their big-picture perspective, experience, and sense of ownership, contributes to our strategic direction and quality.

You’ll work in an environment where not everything is predetermined. This requires maturity in decision-making, composure in the face of complexity, and the ability to provide direction even when frameworks are still evolving. This applies specifically to the budgeting process: in addition to your regular duties, you’ll actively contribute to its further development, including through the implementation of a new budgeting tool.

Your Role
As a business controller, you’ll be part of a small team. You’ll serve as a subject matter expert and a sounding board, and you’ll contribute to:
  • Strategic analyses and comprehensive recommendations for management and executive leadership
  • The primary focus is on ensuring the proper implementation and execution of the planning and control cycle.
  • Collaboration with academic, research, and support departments
  • Clearly communicating financial and business insights within the team and the organization
  • Strengthening the budgeting process, in which you will play a key role in setting up and testing a new budgeting software package, alongside the existing budgeting process in Excel
  • Identifying opportunities for improvement and contributing ideas on the transition to a more efficient, more standardized budgeting process

What characterizes the candidate?
  • has at least 3 years of experience in a similar position;
  • has a critical, independent and overarching view and insight, thus contributing to the further development of ArtEZ;
  • possesses core qualities such as objectivity, strong analytical skills, and attention to detail;
  • is familiar with Excel and can easily switch between the existing process and a new software environment, without losing sight of the progress of the regular budget
  • Has a "hands on" and flexible attitude;
  • Is persistent in achieving results and holds parties accountable;
  • has a higher vocational education (HBO) or academic level of work and thinking in the field, with a solid background in business administration—e.g., a degree in Accountancy or Controlling;
  • has an affinity for education and is able to quickly grasp new concepts;
