It features a vast landscape spanning nearly 300 km², a historic fortified town, 24 villages, and 3 town centers, each with its own identity, history, and spatial challenges. Here, you don’t work on standard solutions, but on places where history, quality of life, housing, landscape, and social developments converge.

We are looking for an urban planner who looks beyond simply drawing up a plan. A professional who can get to the heart of spatial issues, reconcile differing interests, and translate designs into a future-proof living environment.

What will you do?

As an urban planner, you’ll work on the development and spatial quality of the municipality of Coevorden. You’ll combine design, consulting, and process management, and you’ll be involved in both small- and large-scale spatial development projects.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Preparation of urban design plans, spatial studies, and layout proposals.
• Provide advice on land-use initiatives and developments within the municipality.
• Reviewing plans and initiatives at the Environmental Roundtable.
• Monitoring the spatial quality of neighborhoods, villages, public spaces, and new developments.
• Presenting plans to administrators, residents, and other stakeholders.
• Facilitating participatory processes and spatial initiatives led by residents and organizations, such as the Collective Private Commissioning (CPO).
• Collaborating with colleagues from fields such as urban planning, transportation, landscape architecture, economics, and permitting.
• Contributing ideas on policy development, visions, and spatial frameworks.
• Support and collaborate with the current urban planner within the organization.
• Contribute to the continued professionalization of the field of urban planning within the municipality.

Your role

As an urban planner, you are a designer, advisor, and guardian of Coevorden’s urban quality.

You understand that design is more than just drawing. You can analyze spatial issues and translate them into solutions that take into account policy, cultural history, landscape, social developments, and the identity of our communities.

You’re able to sit at both the boardroom table and the coffee table. One day you’re presenting a plan to the municipal executive or the city council; the next, you’re talking with residents about their ideas and concerns.

You'll be working on projects that will shape the face of the municipality for generations to come.

What do you bring?

• A degree in urban planning, urban design, spatial planning, or a related field.
• Experience with urban design and spatial planning issues.
• Knowledge of spatial development and relevant laws and regulations.
• Strong spatial and analytical skills.
• Strong communication skills.
• Experience advising within an administrative setting or the ambition to further develop in this area.
• The ability to work independently and to build relationships with colleagues, administrators, and residents.
