Role description and task arrangements

Schiedam
Schiedam is an innovative manufacturing city with metropolitan challenges as well as neighborhood-oriented issues. Schiedam is a place full of character. With the windmills, the Lange Haven, the distilleries and the harbors as important heritage from the unique history of the city. The green lungs, the backyard Midden Delfland and village Kethel are important elements that make living in Schiedam within the urbanized agglomeration pleasant. Art, culture and heritage, restaurants and events in the historic city center give atmosphere to the city. Schiedam presents itself as authentic, innovative and lively. Heritage is an engine for area revitalization, not least for our historic city center. Reallocation, restoration and maintenance of monuments are important here.
The success of policy depends on assisting owners of monuments in preserving their properties and other valuable heritage matters: from strategically thinking along with large construction projects to having the flushing ship restored. Schiedam has more than two hundred national monuments and more than three hundred municipal monuments. The inner city has been designated as a protected cityscape.
We are looking for a monument policy officer who wants to shape this task together with colleagues.

Team
Monument Care is part of team Culture, Economy and City Promotion. Schiedam has ambition with its heritage. Whether it concerns the typical gin buildings in the city center, the shipbuilding companies in the harbors or the village center of Kethel, heritage is an important identity carrier of our municipality. Not for nothing has heritage been positioned within the team that focuses on city marketing.
The cluster consists of a total of 5 employees. You work as a team with the two colleagues in the field of historic preservation and licensing. There is also a policy advisor for policy advice and development and a colleague who focuses more on the inner city.
The team works closely and tightly together. We enjoy hanging out with each other, learning from each other, being sociable and inspired. Humor is important!

What will you do?
As policy officer for monuments you assess and supervise permit applications. In doing so you represent the interests of historic preservation and you are a liaison between the applicant, the advisory committee on monuments, the advisors of the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel erfgoed and internal Schiedam colleagues of the Permits and Enforcement team. Ultimately, you draft the advice that forms part of the environmental permit.
You oversee the proper execution of licensed work on monuments. In special or complex projects you sometimes play a more supervisory role. You play a role in enforcement of illegal work on protected monuments or on buildings within the Protected Cityscape.
In addition, you will handle questions from monument owners regarding their monument or characteristic buildings within the Protected Cityscape. So you will regularly be on location to give advice on maintenance, preservation or necessary permits for proposed work. This makes you one of the faces of monument conservation in Schiedam.

What do you bring?
  • Education in the field of heritage or architecture
  • 2 years or more of municipal experience
  • 2 years or more experience in licensing
  • Hourly rate up to 95 euros
  • Physical presence on site as much as possible
  • 32 hours available from September 1, 2025
  • 12 months to Sept. 1, 2026, with option to extend 2x 6 months
