Role description and task arrangements

Behavioral Specialist (Advisor on Sustainable Behavior and Participation)

We are looking for a sustainability behavioral specialist to temporarily support our team of four behavioral experts in the Sustainability Team of the Expertise Department at the Midden-Holland Environmental Agency (ODMH) in Gouda. This is due to the increasing number of assignments and the current leave of our permanent colleague.

Municipalities are working hard to motivate and encourage residents to make their homes and surroundings more sustainable, and your expertise is indispensable in this effort. You know how to get people moving, how to make sustainable choices appealing, and how to develop creative, concrete ideas that truly help residents take action. Additionally, you understand how to design participation in a way that makes residents feel heard and well-engaged in municipal projects and policies. Think, for example, of further shaping marketing and communication around multi-year collective insulation projects, developing behavioral interventions to reduce residual waste, or setting up a participatory approach to explore a natural gas-free neighborhood.

Who are you?

We’re looking for someone with a background in behavioral sciences (such as psychology, sociology, or a comparable field) and experience with behavioral projects. You don’t have to be a die-hard researcher; it’s mainly about the practical application of behavioral insights. You have a people-oriented approach and enjoy applying your expertise more broadly, for example in a process or project leadership role or within participatory projects. Experience with participatory projects is a plus, but the motivation to learn this is just as important.

Our behavioral specialists also work in areas that extend beyond sustainability. For example, there is an exciting project focused on strengthening collaboration between environmental services, and colleagues are regularly asked to contribute ideas on a wide range of environmental issues. Your knowledge of target groups and behavioral change is essential in this regard.

What will you be doing?
  • Developing and implementing projects for municipalities in the areas of sustainable behavior and community engagement.
  • Providing advice based on behavioral expertise regarding how to engage target audiences, remove barriers, and encourage residents who want to adopt more sustainable practices.
  • Providing advice on public participation, for example, in exploratory studies aimed at identifying natural gas-free solutions at the neighborhood level.
  • Contributing ideas on broader environmental issues from a behavioral perspective, such as collaboration between environmental agencies or other environmental topics.
