Highly Complex Care | Innovation | Top Clinical Team

Are you an experienced ICU nurse who thrives on complex patient care, innovation, and collaboration at the highest level? We are seeking an interim ICU nurse for the Intensive Care Center at UMC Utrecht who is eager to make an immediate impact in an academic setting.

Your work environment

You will be working on a Level 3 Intensive Care Unit with 36 beds, where highly complex care is provided to a very diverse group of patients. This includes open-heart surgery, (neuro)trauma, hematology, and advanced treatments such as ECMO, LVAD, and transplants.

Together with approximately 140 ICU nurses and nursing students, you’ll work in three close-knit teams to provide top-quality clinical care. Innovation, research, and collaboration are central to our work. In addition, the ICU is closely involved with the Emergency Hospital and collaborates with the Department of Defense, which means you’ll also have the opportunity to play a role in large-scale crisis situations.


What will you do?

As an interim ICU nurse, you are responsible for the entire nursing care process and act as the coordinator of care:

  • You organize, coordinate, and provide complex intensive care and psychosocial support
  • You monitor, support, and take over vital functions using advanced equipment
  • You will independently perform specialized nursing procedures in accordance with protocols and legislation (BIG)
  • You develop nursing care plans, evaluate them, and adjust them based on clinical reasoning
  • You will participate in multidisciplinary consultations and provide advice based on your expertise
  • You coordinate the care process during your shift and take charge when necessary
  • You will mentor and coach colleagues and professionals in training
  • You actively contribute to quality improvement, innovation, and the implementation of new work methods
  • You will contribute to applied and scientific research

In addition, you play an important role in encouraging patients to take charge of their own care and in supporting their loved ones.

  • Experience in a large ICU is a strong advantage
  • Knowledge of cardiac surgery is a strong asset
