Role description and task arrangements

Integral Project Manager Phase 0 (interim basis) - UMC Utrecht

Make an immediate impact as integral project manager construction & housing on patient care, research, education and work environment. You will be ultimately responsible for multiple complex construction projects from initial planning through safe commissioning.

This is what you will do
As Integral Project Manager, you will be responsible for multiple complex, accommodation projects with a budget of €5-15 million. You will create modern and efficient working environments for UMC Utrecht, where professionals can work and collaborate pleasantly. You work from planning to safe commissioning and are ultimately responsible for the delivery of a use-ready accommodation.
The project concerns Phase 0 of the Integrated Strategic Property Plan (iSVP). Phase 0 focuses on all preconditional (sub)projects needed to enable the large-scale (re)construction in Phase 1. This includes:
  •  moving departments to free up specific building areas,
  • repositioning logistics functions, realizing temporary facilities to support continuity,
  • and the careful stripping or demolition of existing building components.
This phase forms the basis for the future renovation and requires an integral approach in which planning, engineering and logistics come together. You are responsible for the integral management of seven subprojects, varying in size from €5 to €15 million per project. For each subproject a project leader has been appointed who is accountable and works closely with you as integral project manager.
Your duties include:
  • Overall project management: You lead the entire project from start to finish. In doing so, you work closely with the construction project leaders who are responsible for the realization of the various construction projects. You focus in all phases on the integral management and turn the project into a functioning (part of the) hospital including inventory, ICT facilities and the relocation. For smaller projects you are able to direct the design and realization of the construction yourself.
  • Budget management: You set the project budget, monitor it closely and make adjustments where necessary, without compromising on quality.
  • Stakeholder management: You are the point of contact for all stakeholders. Within the UMC, you work closely with physicians, nurses and researchers. You maintain contacts with all stakeholders including important co-determination bodies of the UMC Utrecht. You know the key players personally and invest permanently in the relationship.
  • Quality Assurance: You will work with the Facilities Management and IT Directorate to define and monitor the programs of requirements to ensure they fit within the established frameworks.
  • Accountability and governance: You prepare steering committees in terms of content and are able to operate at the BoD and SB level as well.
This is where you will work
You will be part of the Construction & Housing Department, a key department within UMC Utrecht, responsible for all major real estate and housing projects. Based on the Integral Strategic Real Estate Plan, the department works in phases on the complete renovation and sustainability of the entire real estate portfolio. The department brings together the interests, wishes and requirements of patients, staff and students in the new housing to be realized. Focused on the optimal functioning of the UMC Utrecht as a whole.

Renovation for tomorrow's care
Healthcare is changing and UMC Utrecht is preparing for the future. This includes new working methods, the extensive use of information technology and improved housing to optimize processes. These changes require an extensive renovation of our buildings on the Utrecht Science Park, with approximately 450,000 m2 of space, including the immediate surroundings. We are adopting a phased renovation process over a 25-year period, aiming to continue our healthcare, education and research services as much as possible. This presents unique challenges to designers, builders, and to our patients, staff and students.

This you take with you
Education: Minimum of a completed college or university degree in a relevant field such as construction engineering, property management.
Experience: At least 10-15 years of experience leading, integrated housing projects within complex (healthcare) organizations.
Skills: Excellent project management skills, including budget management, and strong communication and leadership skills. You have knowledge of methodologies such as Prince2 or IPMA, and experience with project management software such as MS Projects or Primavera.
Characteristics: You are strategic, managerial, decisive and able to work both independently and as part of a team. In doing so, you have an unerring sense of main and secondary issues. You can interact with professionals from different fields and have strong financial insight. You can demonstrably operate within a complex and 'political' stakeholder field.

Deployment
Working days will be mutually agreed upon, on-site physical presence as much as possible but at least 2-3 days (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday). 24-32 hour commitment to the assignment on an interim basis. Starting period is January - June 2026 with option to extend.
