Role description and task arrangements

Purpose of the function

The recovery nurse is responsible for providing direct care to patients in the postoperative phase. The focus is on monitoring vital signs, ensuring patient safety, and supporting the patient (and, in the case of children, their parents as well).


Main tasks

  • Monitoring vital signs after surgery
  • Identifying and treating complications
  • Administering medication, including pain relievers
  • Operating medical equipment
  • Acting independently in emergency situations, such as CPR
  • Transferring patients to the nursing ward
  • Providing information and support to patients and parents

Care Process

  • Planning and providing nursing care
  • Continuously monitoring, analyzing, and adjusting care
  • Collaborating with doctors and other disciplines
  • Ensuring accurate record-keeping

Quality and Development

  • Working in accordance with protocols and guidelines
  • Identifying bottlenecks and contributing to improvements
  • Staying up to date on professional knowledge and continuing education
  • Contribute to quality improvement within the department

Organization and Collaboration

  • Coordinating patient-centered care
  • Setting Priorities in Emergency Situations
  • Ensuring a clear handover
  • Collaborating with various disciplines within the healthcare sector

Job Requirements

  • Nursing Diploma (Level 5)
  • Additional training to become a recovery, ICU, or anesthesia nurse
  • Preferably work experience in a hospital
