Role description and task arrangements

UMC Utrecht is seeking an experienced Sedation and Anesthesia Technician (SAM) for the Vital Functions Division. Within this division, the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Operating Room, and medical wards work closely together in an innovative, high-quality care environment. The focus is on safe patient care, quality, collaboration, and continuous development.

The Sedation Anesthesia Technician is responsible for independently performing sedation procedures on adult patients (ASA 1-2), with an anesthesiologist available remotely to supervise.

Work:

  • Independent screening of patients prior to sedation procedures
  • Taking a medical history and performing a targeted physical examination
  • Classifying patients into the appropriate risk category
  • Providing information and advice to patients about sedation procedures
  • Administering hypnotics, analgesics, and other medications independently in accordance with protocol
  • Monitoring vital signs with advanced medical equipment
  • Early detection and appropriate response to acute situations or complications
  • Clinical reasoning and independent decision-making during sedation procedures
  • Providing post-procedural care and assessing discharge criteria
  • Recording vital signs, complications, and incidents
  • Communicate and coordinate with the treatment team, anesthesiologists, and the recovery unit
  • Contributing to quality improvement, policy, research, and the advancement of expertise
  • Providing clinical instruction and supervision in the field of sedation

Job Requirements:

  • Registered Nurse (RN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree
  • CZO Certificate in Anesthesia Technology
  • Completed training as a Sedation and Anesthesia Technician (SAM)
  • At least 5 years of clinical experience as an anesthesia technician (including training)
  • At least 0.6 FTE working as a practicing SAM staff member
  • Valid ALS (Advanced Life Support) certificate
  • Proficiency in Dutch and English

Knowledge and skills:

  • Knowledge of sedation techniques, pharmacology, and vital signs
  • Experience with monitoring and treatment of vital signs
  • Clinical reasoning and decision-making in acute situations
  • Analytical and conceptual thinking skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of BLS and ALS resuscitation techniques
  • Knowledge of legal frameworks such as the WGBO and BIG
