Job Description: Senior IT Lead / Engineer, Storage & Data Transformation

Required experience

Level of Education

Job Posting Introduction

Will you help build a future-proof IT landscape for UMC Utrecht? Within the Infrastructure Cluster, we are looking for a Senior IT Lead / Engineer who can translate tactical IT policy into robust solutions and take the lead in a complex, cross-team transformation program focused on the decoupling and governance of our data infrastructure.

What will you be doing in this role?

What we work on every day:

  • Virtualization & Networking: We manage a modern VMware platform (VCF) within our private cloud and are continuously developing our network virtualization using NSX.
  • Data & Storage: From large-scale unstructured data storage to high-performance block storage (SAN), we ensure that your data is always available.
  • Transformation & Governance: We are in the midst of a large-scale transformation program in which we are decoupling our network drives, establishing data governance frameworks, and implementing a mature IAM/RBAC structure.

We’re looking for a Senior professional who not only excels technically but also takes the lead in managing processes, builds connections across teams, and thrives in an environment where hard work and humor go hand in hand. With us, you’ll find a place where you can engage in high-level discussions, but where a human touch and a pleasant working atmosphere always come first.

Your duties and responsibilities:

  • Cross-Team Decoupling: You serve as the central liaison between the Server Infrastructure & Data, IAM (Identity & Access Management), and Security teams and the business stakeholders to lead the decoupling of complex network components from both a process and technical perspective.
  • Data Governance & Policy: You will initiate and develop the storage and data policies (including data ownership and retention policies) and implement them in practice.
  • IAM & RBAC Implementation: Working closely with the IAM team, you will design and implement a future-proof Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) structure at the folder and data levels (NTFS/ACL).
  • Tool Selection & Implementation: You will lead the process of market research, software selection (RFI/RFP), and the final implementation of innovative enterprise tools for data migration and data classification.
  • Data & Lifecycle Management: You oversee and optimize unstructured data storage (Dell PowerScale) and block storage (Pure Storage) throughout their entire lifecycle.
  • Design & Migration: You design and coordinate complex, risk-driven data migrations while maximizing performance.
  • Security & Compliance: You ensure that our environments comply with NEN 7510, NIS-2, and enterprise governance standards through proactive controls and risk management.
  • Content-Based & Project-Based Leadership: You serve as a sounding board for IT architects, oversee the process-based progress of the transformation project, and coach fellow engineers to enhance the team’s technical expertise.

Where will you work?

You’ll be joining the Server Infrastructure and Data team within our Infrastructure cluster: a team of passionate engineers who work together to manage and further develop the digital foundation of UMC Utrecht. The atmosphere in the department is informal and down-to-earth; we take our work very seriously, but there’s always room for a good joke and a sense of perspective.

Due to the ongoing transformation program, you will also work closely with project teams, security officers, and specialists from related disciplines (such as IAM).

What does an employee bring to the table?

  • HBO working and thinking level.
  • At least 5 years of experience as a Senior Engineer or IT Lead in a complex enterprise or healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrable experience successfully managing transformation projects or complex data migrations (both in terms of content and process).
  • In-depth expertise in scale-out NAS, block storage, and complex permission structures (NTFS/ACL).
  • Thorough conceptual and practical knowledge of IAM principles and RBAC modeling.
  • Experience with tool selection and implementation processes (e.g., in the areas of data discovery, classification, or migration).
  • Extensive experience with VMware (VCF/vSphere) and modern backup solutions (e.g., Rubrik).
  • Security & Architecture: Extensive experience with complex IT architecture, integration issues, and working within security frameworks such as NEN 7510.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and ITSM principles.
  • Strong communication and advisory skills: You are an effective communicator with stakeholders and can clearly explain complex topics.
