The energy transition requires both speed and diligence. As a Safety Specialist, you’ll be responsible for strengthening the safety culture within one or more organizational units. You’ll support team leaders, department heads, and operations managers in addressing the question: How do we keep safety on the agenda at all times, even under high work pressure? This is a hybrid position for 32–40 hours per week, based in Duiven, Amsterdam, or Leeuwarden. You’ll help make the grid safer at Alliander!

The energy transition is impossible without you as a Safety Specialist

At Alliander, we work with and for various organizational units. Responsibility for Safety, Environment, and Quality (SEQ) lies within the operations themselves—with management, engineers, supervisors, and work planners, among others. Your role involves providing tactical advice, coaching, fostering connections, and setting the direction.

As a Safety Specialist, you’ll advise team leaders and managers, and you’ll also work in the field—for example, during safety inspection rounds. You’ll spend most of your workweek working from home and at our offices, including about two days a week in Arnhem or Duiven.

We’re building the energy grid of the future for everyone, together with everyone. And as a Safety Specialist, you’ll be part of this effort. Among other things, your responsibilities will include:

  • Advising regional management on goals, annual plans, and the further implementation of Alliander’s “Everyone Safe at Home” strategy;
  • advising management and supervisors on the practical application of safety policies, with an emphasis on behavior, responsibility, and leading by example;
  • analyzing security incidents, trends, and data, and translating these into clear recommendations and targeted improvement actions at the tactical level;
  • serve as a bridge between VMK policymakers and the front lines: you ensure that policies are practical and that feedback from the field reaches the right people;
  • contribute to the development and implementation of toolkits, training programs, and interventions (in collaboration with subject matter experts);
  • building support for safety measures by working in a relationship-oriented manner with managers and stakeholders;
  • supporting the regional MTs of organizational units, including by aligning with consultation structures and jointly determining safety priorities;
  • Conducting (joint) investigations and observations on site, always in an advisory capacity to management.

You’ll help make the grid even more complete at Alliander
Did you know that Alliander consists of various companies that work together to build a reliable and future-proof energy grid? With a large team of professionals, we develop and manage the energy grid for millions of residents and businesses in the Netherlands. Everything we do, we do with an eye toward the people who count on us: our customers. And thanks to our talented team, we have complete confidence in the Netherlands’ energy future. Together with you, we’re making the energy transition possible—for and with our customers.

A mindset where only the best is good enough is only possible if you have enough energy. And the right work environment gives you that. The VMK department consists of dedicated and honest colleagues. In this role, you’ll strengthen the Safety, Environment, and Quality staff department. The department stands for “everyone home safely” and works with the various organizational units to improve processes and quality while minimizing our impact on the environment. In doing so, Safety, Environment, and Quality makes a significant contribution to Alliander’s ambition to handle a much greater volume of work. Read the story of your future colleague Renee Awater, VMK Business Partner at Alliander, here. She’ll tell you more about it:

"Here, employees come first" - Working at Alliander

You make the grid more energetic
Building an organization that’s future-proof. You do this by drawing on your own strengths and talents. And you do it with us.  In this role, your impact depends primarily on how you collaborate and exert influence. You’re able to stand alongside a manager, engage them in shared responsibility, and make safety a topic of discussion—even when the pressure is high.

You'll need to bring the following with you:

  • HBO-level work and thinking skills and a completed MVK (Intermediate Safety Studies) or HVK (Advanced Safety Studies) program.
  • At least three years of relevant experience in a safety consulting role, preferably in a technically, industrially, or structurally complex environment;
  • experience working with frameworks such as ISO standards, VCA, and the Safety Ladder, and especially with applying them within organizations;
  • Strong advisory and advocacy skills: you know how to win over managers without holding a formal hierarchical position;
  • organizational sensitivity: you understand how decision-making, interests, and relationships work within a large organization.

Customer focus comes naturally to you. You understand that everything we do ultimately impacts our customers, and you act accordingly.

Better organized just for you
Based on a 40-hour workweek, you’ll receive:

  • A salary ranging from €4,672 to €7,737 gross per month (pay scale 9 or 10, depending on your experience).
  • an annual individual choice budget (IKB) of 18% (full-time) or 12.8% (part-time) of your gross annual salary. This includes 8% vacation allowance. You can have this amount paid out, but you can also buy extra days off, for example. You choose what suits you.
  • 24.5 vacation days per year, liberally supplementable from your IKB.
  • Paid parental leave. That makes sense, because by law, you’re entitled to a total of 9 weeks at 70% of your salary during your child’s first year of life. After that, it’s unpaid. We do things differently. We continue to pay 70% of the minimum wage for your entire leave period. Immediately after the birth of your child, we make things even better for partners. You can supplement your statutory birth leave, allowing you to stay home even longer while continuing to receive full pay.
  • A December year-end bonus of 6% of your annual salary.
  • Every year, you receive a DI budget of €700 for your long-term employability. For example, you can use it to cover the costs of your sport or hobby, make your home more sustainable and eco-friendly, or reduce your student loan debt with DUO. You decide how to use your budget.
